It gives the hilt its elegant, elongated silhouette and makes it lighter and quicker in the hand than a full-width grip, which is why thin necks are the usual choice for spins, forms and flourishes. The same narrow section is also the hilt's structural weak point, so this is \u003cstrong\u003enot a duelling saber\u003c\/strong\u003e. Hilt-to-hilt contact and heavy clashing are what break thin necks.
