Our double-bladed hilts recreate that saberstaff in machined aluminium, alongside the shorter Sith models he carried later — installed and tested by our technicians here in the UK.

The saberstaff, and what it is actually called

Maul’s weapon is a saberstaff: a double-bladed lightsaber, two emitters on one long hilt, built to an old Sith pattern by Darth Sidious’s apprentice himself. Fans call it the Maul saber; saberstaff is the in-universe term. It is why his fighting looks nothing like any Jedi in the film — constant rotation, both ends live, almost no guard.

The reveal on Naboo

Maul first appears in The Phantom Menace, and on Tatooine he ignites only one blade against Qui-Gon Jinn. The second emitter stays secret until Naboo, where he thumbs it alive mid-fight in front of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan Kenobi — the Duel of the Fates turns on that single beat. Obi-Wan cuts the hilt in half before it ends; Maul survived, and carried a shorter staff through the Clone Wars years afterwards.

Why the hilt is built the way it is

A saberstaff is long, gripped at the centre and swung from it, so the whole thing has to be stiff and evenly weighted. Ours are machined from aircraft-grade aluminium with a live emitter at each end, and if you would rather build a staff from two single hilts, that is what our couplers are for. Maul’s blades read red on screen — the Sith signature — but on our sabers that is a setting, not a fixed part.

Choosing your Maul saber

Both blade formats are here. Base Lit runs an RGBx soundboard and is the cheapest way into a duel-ready staff; Neopixel runs Xenopixel or Proffie, for fully lit blades with flash-on-clash. Colour and effects are configured on the board — what makes it a Maul saber is the hilt and the preloaded sound font. A staff eats blades twice as fast, so keep spares.

What is Darth Maul’s lightsaber called?

Did Maul build it himself?

Yes, as Darth Sidious’s apprentice — following a saberstaff pattern that long predates him. The design is ancient Sith, not a Maul invention.

Can I duel with a double-bladed saber?
