Retractable Lightsabers

A retractable lightsaber is one whose blade comes off the hilt in seconds — for travel, for storage, or to fit a shorter blade. Worth being precise about the word: the blade lifts out of the emitter, it does not slide down inside the handle. Every saber below is a full duel-capable saber in Base Lit or Neopixel, installed and tested by our UK technicians.

What “retractable” actually means

A retractable lightsaber is a removable-blade saber. The blade seats into the emitter and locks in place; to take it off you release it and lift it clear. Nothing on this page — or anywhere on the market — has a blade that telescopes down into the hilt, because that is not something current technology can do. What you get instead is a blade you can remove whenever you like, which is the part that actually matters day to day.

Why a removable blade is worth having

  • Travel and storage. A hilt on its own packs flat into a bag. A 36" blade does not.
  • Blade lengths. Blade sizing is standardised, so one hilt runs more than one length — 36" is the default on most models, with 32" and 28" options where offered. The product page lists the lengths for that saber.
  • Replace the blade, not the saber. A blade that has taken a season of contact can be swapped from our blades range instead of retiring the whole hilt.
  • Display. Plenty of owners keep the hilt on a stand and only fit the blade when they are using it — a blade plug finishes the emitter when the blade is out.

Removable does not mean fragile

Once the blade is seated it behaves exactly like a fixed one: it takes contact sparring, and most hilts here also appear in our duelling lightsabers. The exception is flat-profile blades — fine for light clashing, not for full-out duelling — and the product page says which is which. For the full effects package, look at the Neopixel models with flash-on-clash and smooth swing.

Formats and shapes

A removable blade is standard across this range, so your real choice is format and shape. Base Lit pairs with the RGBX soundboard and is the best-value way in. Neopixel lights the full length of the blade and pairs with plug-and-play Xenopixel or programmable Proffie. Beyond the single blade there are double-bladed and crossguard hilts, and display-first pieces in collectors edition.

Retractable lightsaber FAQs

Is the blade really retractable?

It is removable rather than retracting. The blade detaches from the hilt and stores separately — nothing slides into the handle. “Retractable” is the phrase most people search for, so it is the phrase we use, but removable-blade is the accurate description.

Do real lightsabers exist?

Not the plasma kind. What exists is a lit blade that mounts to a metal hilt, glows along its full length on Neopixel, and answers swings and clashes with sound and light. That is as close as the technology gets, and it is genuinely convincing in the hand — but the blade is a lit tube, not plasma.

Does taking the blade in and out wear it out?

No. The emitter is designed for repeated blade changes. It is a normal part of owning the saber, not a special operation.

Can I duel with the blade fitted?

Yes. Once locked in, a removable blade takes sparring exactly like a fixed one. Flat-profile blades are the exception — light clashing only.

Can I buy spare blades?

Yes — see saber blades. If you want to change the hilt itself rather than the blade, the parts range covers emitters, grips and pommels.

What is in the box, and how is it backed?

Sabers arrive with a charging cable and the screws and hex key you need; some models include a stand, and the product page lists exactly what is included. Every lightsaber ships free to the UK, EU and US, carries a 12-month warranty, and is installed and tested by our in-house UK technicians — after-sales at repairs@padawanoutpost.com.
