What a retractable lightsaber actually is
A retractable lightsaber is a saber whose blade detaches from the hilt in seconds. It isn't a telescoping toy that collapses into itself — those exist, but they're flimsy party props. A real retractable saber is a full-strength, duel-capable weapon: aluminium hilt, polycarbonate blade, proper electronics — the blade simply mounts and dismounts on demand. How the removable blade works
The blade seats into the emitter at the top of the hilt and locks firmly in place. Because blade sizing is standardised, one hilt can run different lengths — most models take 36", 32" or 28" blades — and a battle-worn blade can be replaced outright from the parts range instead of retiring the saber.
