Yellow Lightsaber

Yellow is the rarest blade on screen: the Jedi Temple Guards' pikes, and then Rey's own saber in the closing shot of The Rise of Skywalker. This is what yellow signifies and where it actually appears. The rarest colour on screen

In live action, yellow appears once: a single shot at the very end of the sequel trilogy. It has no lineage, no run of famous duels and no era of its own. That scarcity is most of the appeal — it is the one Jedi colour that still reads as unusual rather than as a team badge.

Much of what people associate with yellow comes from outside the films, in the older Expanded Universe and the roleplaying games, where it belongs to the Jedi Sentinel. Where the Guardian trained for the blade and the Consular for the Force, the Sentinel sat between the two: investigators, trackers and specialists. It is a good fit for a colour that turns up on temple guards and on one self-made saber.

The Jedi Temple Guard

The clearest yellow in canon belongs to the Temple Guards of The Clone Wars — masked, anonymous Jedi who set aside their names for the length of the posting and carried double-bladed yellow pikes inside the Temple on Coruscant. They are the reason yellow reads as duty rather than heroism. Nobody knows who is behind the mask, and that is the point of them.

Rey's saber

Rey ends The Rise of Skywalker on Tatooine, burying the two Skywalker sabers and igniting one she has built herself. It is yellow, and it is the first time a lead character in the films carries the colour. As a closing image it is a deliberate break: she is not continuing the blue line she inherited, she is starting something of her own. Running a blade yellow

No saber here is yellow as a product: there is no yellow hilt finish in the range, and the blade colour is not fixed to the saber either. It is set on the soundboard: Base Lit blades change colour from the hilt controls on an RGBX board, and Neopixel blades are configured in the Xenopixel app or, on Proffie, per sound font. What ties a saber to a character is the preloaded sound font, not the colour it happens to be showing.

What does a yellow lightsaber mean?

Duty and self-definition. In canon it belongs to the Jedi Temple Guards, who gave up their names to hold the post; in the older Expanded Universe it belongs to the Jedi Sentinel, the investigator between Guardian and Consular. Rey's saber at the end of the sequel trilogy adds a third reading: a blade built by someone choosing her own line rather than inheriting one.
